Seventeen: Congratulations on being named the newest CoverGirl! How are you feeling at the moment?!
Becky G: I don’t even know where to start. I’m so excited! I mean, I’m a CoverGirl! Just the sound of that is just insane. It’s just a dream come true. Music is the way I express myself, but right behind that is the way I dress myself and the way I do my makeup. The first makeup I ever bought was CoverGirl. I grew up watching my mom put on CoverGirl makeup, and now to be shooting my commercial and to say that I’m an “easy, breezy, beautiful CoverGirl” is just crazy. Seriously, I wanted to cry. That was the last line of the commercial shoot I had to do, and when I got to say, “easy, breezy, beautiful Covergirl” I was like, “Oh my God!”
17: What beauty products are you obsessed with right now?
Becky G: For my everyday look, I don’t like going anywhere without eye makeup. My favorite is eyeliner. I really, really love [CoverGirl's] Ink It! eyeliner and also the Flamed Out Mascara because my eyelashes are tiny, so when I put it on, it really makes them stand out. For shows, I really like using the Flamed Out Shadow Pencils because they really stay on. They’re a gel shadow, so they’re really creamy, and blendable, they don’t go anywhere.
17: Do you have a swear-by secret to scoring perfect eyeliner every time?
Becky G: When you’re first learning how to do eyeliner, it’s really hard to get both lids the same. A good tip for when you’re putting it on, is to make sure your elbow is on a table. Make sure your arm’s really stable. And make sure you have an eye makeup q-tip to get that really sharp line. But the Ink It! is pretty sharp already, so it’s really rare that you’ll need a q-tip, but just in case you get a little sloppy, [it helps] to really get the line.
17: Do you have a beauty secret that you live by?
Becky G: I think the basics are really important. I moisturize and wash my face. Being a teenager [who gets] breakouts, I think it’s really important that you have a foundation that doesn’t irritate your skin and also covers everything up. For instance, I think the Covergirl Clean Whipped Creme Foundation does that really well.
17: Do you have any makeup moments that you regret?
Becky G: I’ve been using makeup since I was ten years old. I’ve learned a lot of do’s and don’ts over the years. But one would definitely be that you should do your makeup for the occasion. There were definitely a bunch of times I would go to the beach with a ton of makeup and then it would melt off. It doesn’t look right. My biggest don’t is don’t wear makeup to the beach. You’re going to be in the water, you’re going to be in the sun. Just go for a simple, tinted moisturizer, and you’ll be fine.
17: What’s your morning beauty routine?
Becky G: My makeup routine is pretty simple. It starts before I put on my makeup. I always take out my outfit before I put on my makeup. I like doing my makeup according to what I’m going to wear and what colors [are in my look]. I always wash my face every morning and put on moisturizer. Then I put on my foundation and my powder–just, the basics to get a fresh, clean face look. I choose out what color eyeshadows I want to use for the day. Usually, if it’s like an everyday look, I keep it really, really simple and I do like the cream eyeshadows. And then I do the simple colors-the vanillas and the soft colors-and I use the Ink It! eyeliner and I do my everyday cat eye.
17: Do you have a secret beauty talent?
Becky G: I would say my eyeliner. That’s the one thing I can do on everybody, too. I love playing with makeup, so if I have days off and I personally don’t want to put any makeup on my face, I will sit down my little sister, or if my cousins are going to go out to the club and I’m staying home on a Friday night, they come over and I do their makeup.
Becky G, aka Becky From the Block, will release her ‘Play It Again’ EP on July 16. It boasts four new tracks, including a Pitbull feature.
Pit is like Lil Wayne and Snoop Lion — he is featuring left and right, especially with a lot of female up-and-comers.
Pit appears on ‘Can’t Get Enough,’ with the other tracks being ‘Zoomin’ Zoomin’,’ ‘Built for This,’ and ‘Lovin’ What You Do.’ Dr. Luke exec produced the set, with production and songwriting from heavy hitters like Max Martin, the Jam, Pit, will.i.am and the Cataracs.
